RESTAURANTS AND CAFES

RESTAURANTS

Two Marys (U dwau Marii) at Parkan street, great atmostphere, mediaeval food, mead and other specialities, riverside tables, lovely people serving. Book at weekends.

Jailhouse (Satlava) a genuine old jailhouse turned restaurant with meat grilled over open fire.Satlavska street runs off the main square. Its charm by now a little commercialised, but well worth a visit. Book in advance at weekends.

Nona Gina run by a resident Italian family, best pizzas/ pasta in town, great service. In Klasterni street, near the Castle.

Gypsy Tavern (Cikanska Jizba) Dlouha Street. One of the very few remaining genuine pubs where locals go to drink beer, eat home-cooked food, and listen to the landlord's son's gypsy band – if lucky: there is no timetable. A bit smoky and crowded, but we love it.

Na Louzi - homely cooking, right prices. Look for a restaurant with lots of antique enamel posters near the Square

Good Soldier Svejk on Castle Steps – Czech cuisine, good portions, reasonable prices

U Baby in Roosevaltava Street - another restaurant filled mostly with the locals, good beer and homely cooking

For vegetarians:.

Laibon - restaurant and tea-room in the same street as Two Marys, riverside tables, relaxing tearooms, but could be too laid back for some.

CAFES

Two Widows in Latran - great coffee and cakes by the riverside right in the middle of town.

Two Angels, Panksa St, - very good coffee and cakes, nice music and studenty atmosphere

Cafe Venetti - nice sunny position, near the centre and river, very good coffee served on outside tables.
